Cooking Tips and Tricks
- Ingredient substitutions can add delicious variety and personalise these bars to match your preferences. If peanuts aren’t your thing, feel free to experiment with macadamias, almonds or even pistachios to get your favourite crunch. Dried apricots, mango or coconut flakes can also add a delightful hint of natural sweetness and texture.
- When melting chocolate, always ensure your bowl fits snugly over the saucepan without touching the simmering water. Stir your chocolate gently occasionally until smooth and glossy, avoiding the temptation to rush this step—perfectly melted chocolate makes all the difference.
- To achieve neatly cut squares, make sure the bars are thoroughly chilled and firm before slicing. Dipping your knife in warm water and wiping it dry between slices can also help you achieve clean, sharp edges without cracking or crumbling.
- For an enhanced texture experience, you could sprinkle a touch of sea salt flakes lightly over the chocolate drizzle before it sets. This provides a delicious counterbalance to the sweetness and elevates the flavour profile.
- Storing bars correctly is essential—keep them refrigerated, stored in a sealed and airtight container to ensure freshness and maintain the best texture. Place baking paper between layers if stacking bars to prevent them sticking together.
- Running short on time or patience? Speed things up by carefully placing your bars in the freezer instead of the fridge—this can halve your wait for them to firm up. But don’t forget about them, as they’ll become too hard to slice if left too long.
- Although this recipe calls for smooth peanut butter, using a crunchy variety can add extra texture without compromising taste—ideal if you’re craving a little extra bite.
Troubleshooting Guide
If your bars aren’t setting firmly, double-check your chilling times first—fridge temperatures can vary, so leaving your treats in a little longer often does the trick.
